With a stick of chalk, the artist then draws the intended design onto the metal sheet. Finally, the artist applies a hammer and chisel to the task, cutting, shaping, and contouring the piece to its completion. Once finished, the sculpture is varnished on both sides to protect them for rust. The final appearance is a black-silvery-brown glossy finish. The artisans who work with Beyond Borders are folk artists in the classic sense. They use materials around them in new and inventive ways to create wonderful pieces of art. Whether it's a metal sculpture pounded out of a discarded oil drum or a glass vase shaped from a recycled soda bottle, the transformation results in fine, traditional folk art. I hope you enjoyed this bit of information surrounding this form of art work. These works of art will provide you with years of enjoyment and the satisfaction of knowing that they are made from recycled materials. Now that you know the history behind the art, observe one of the artists, John Sylvester, at his craft.
John was taught the art of sculpturing from Serge, one of the most well known sculptors in Haiti today. John is in his forties and a father of five children.
